What are you worth?

Well apparently according to a QI episode I watched once between £400,000-500,000. Your flesh is worth about £100, your skin worth £20, kidney worth £10,000–20,000, cornea £4,000 etc. We apparently even all have 0.4 milligrams of gold in us worth about 8p!

Mortality rates of males in the UK has apparently dropped 56% since 1956, life expectancy for men and women in the UK has risen by more than a year, in less than a decade. Does this mean you used to be worth more in the past?

Joking aside though how often do we break it down and look at our worth in our professional lives?

Rightly we often measure ourselves against what we think our value is internally but why not look at our value to the external market. Equally are companies aware enough of the actions of competitors and industry demand to bench mark their current level of salaries and benefits?

According to www.itjobswatch.co.uk demand for embedded software engineers has increase close to 20% on 2011 demand but permanent salaries offered have on average remained static.

Likewise demand for digital design engineer between 2012 and 2013 has increased 31% but in the same period average salaries for the skill set have dropped 13.3%

Having recently seen the benefits package at our own company revamped with great success it comes as a shock to read apparently 50% of employers have not reviewed their own benefits offerings since 2008. Does this ring any bells?

Now don’t get me wrong as with anything there are examples of organisations within technology who are getting it right and bucking the trend. Also the companies are not always the enemy here because we consistently come across examples of candidates having excessive expectations without substantiating their demands.

As experts in technology we have found part of the problem maybe attributed to availability of data in our sector. We have a responsibility to try and use our access to the market to provide the facts to our clients and candidate alike.

Why not help us do this by spending 5 minutes completing the following survey on your current position and expectations. Strength of message comes in numbers and just to incentivise you a little more you will be entered into a draw to win yourself a £100 John Lewis voucher in time for Christmas!
